Metro police said they are taking unprecedented measures to make sure the Belmont presidential debate stays safe. The university is not only working to beautify its campus, it's also working to secure it.

Metro police have been planning for this event since February, and they said it takes a bigger effort than a presidential visit.

"It's a similar set-up,” said Metro Police Lt. Donald Hawkins, “but I believe it's more intense because of the international media coverage at this event. We've never had an event that over 3,000 media attend."

More than 400 Metro police officers and police from neighboring towns like Belle Meade, Brentwood and Goodlettsville will be on debate duty. The Secret Service will be on hand, as well as a private security company hired by Belmont.

A huge fence has been constructed around the debate site, and several roads will be closed the day of the event.

Although police can't get specific on details, many officers will be stationed at the perimeter, escorting both motorcades and keeping an eye on protesters.

"I have been notified by several groups that they plan to be down there with their signs and getting their message out," Hawkins said.

The police protection, along with the public works effort, comes with a price tag, but the mayor said the publicity is worth so much more than that.

"It will be substantial,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “It will be in the area of half a million dollars, so it is a major effort and a major investment, but it is the right thing to do."
