Republican nominee Sen. John McCain has agreed to square off against Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama Friday night at the University of Mississippi.

On Wednesday, McCain announced he was suspending his campaign and would not participate in Friday’s first debate of this election, due to the state of the economy and the bailout plan being unresolved.

Obama maintained that this is the time that the public needs to hear from the future leader of the United States.

There was concern that if the Ole Miss debate were canceled, it would impact the debate at Belmont, which is scheduled for Oct. 7.

A Rock The Vote rally for students and the public is being held on Ole Miss’ campus Friday, and similar events are planned for the Nashville debate.

“It’s a wonderful experience,” said Troy Jackson of being a student at Ole Miss during the debate.
