Word On The Street: Low Interest In Metro Mayoral Race

There are six candidates campaigning for the Metro mayor's job, and voters are showing a lack of interest in the election at this point of the race.
Watch: Word On The Street (6/13/07)"I've never seen anything like it," said Metro Election Coordinator Ray Barrett, pointing out a lack of interest. The election is August 2, but early voting is July 13, and Barrett said that's when the most votes are cast.
So, why is the mayor's race so lackluster?Candidates are mostly saying the same things but nothing exciting.Candidate Buck Dozier said Metro's comprehensive high schools are too large and should be closed. So far only former Metro Law Director Karl Dean has spent money on campaign television commercials.I don't remember seeing a single newspaper campaign political ad.So, what are they saving their funds for?Candidates Howard Gentry and David Briley apparently are saving campaign funds by sending out their messages on the Internet. And where are the candidate's yard signs? How are they spending their money? For the mayor's race, almost $2,400,000 has been raised by the candidates. At this point, only a third of that amount has been spent. For instance, candidate Bob Clement has spent only 30 percent of $800,000. Dean has spent 37 percent of $322,535. Buck Dozier has spent almost 48 percent of $389,500.David Briley has spent 51 percent of almost $400,000. Howard Gentry has spent 58 percent of $210,000. Kenneth Eaton has spent 95 percent of $22,000.I wonder what they are spending it on? It beats me.
