Thompson told USA Today that he can't remember the exact point at which he decided to run for president, but that that is his plan.

Thompson, who also gained fame as a successful actor, said he'll make heavy use of the Internet as a tool to communicate with voters.

The paper reports Thompson could formally enter the race as early as the first week of July.

Nashville Could Play Role During Possible Candidacy

According to an NBC News analyst, when Thompson enters the presidential race, Nashville could play a role.

Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s "Hardball,” said he thought Nashville might be a focal point of Thompson’s campaign.

“I think he’s figured out how to sell himself, in fact, I hear he’s going to have his headquarters down in Nashville. These other guys running against him aren’t exactly Grand Ole Opry. He’s got an inside track down there,” Matthews said.

While Nashville seems the logical choice for Thompson’s national headquarters, Tennessee Republican party Chairman Bob Davis said the rumor is pure “speculation.”

Thompson is expected to announce his candidacy for president around July 4.
