NHL Game Summary - Nashville At Minnesota

POSTED: 11:52 pm CDT April 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - Marc-Andre Bergeron netted a pair of goals as Minnesota helped deal a knockout blow to Nashville's playoff hopes with an 8-4 victory at Xcel Energy Center.

Mikko Koivu and Dan Fritsche picked up a goal and assist each for the Wild, who have won three of their last four games, set a season-high for goals and complete the regular season at Columbus on Saturday. However, following Anaheim's 4-3 shootout victory over Dallas, Minnesota was eliminated from the postseason.

"It's not the best game we played this year, but it doesn't matter how you get the points," Koivu said. "We've got to get ready for tomorrow."

Andrew Brunette and Kim Johnsson also lit the lamp. Niklas Backstrom got the win despite allowing four goals on 35 shots.

Jason Arnott tallied twice while Steve Sullivan had a goal and two assists for the Predators (40-34-8), who completed their regular-season slate having lost four of six.

The loss, coupled with a Blues win over the Blue Jackets and Anaheim's victory over Dallas, eliminated Nashville from the playoff race.

Shea Weber added a goal and a helper but Pekka Rinne was victimized in the loss for six goals on 35 shots.

Weber beat Backstrom with 9:13 left in regulation in a 5-on-3 situation to draw Nashville within 5-3.

Koivu appeared to give the Wild a 6-3 edge 19 seconds later, pushing the puck through Rinne as he was pulled down from behind at the left post. A review determined no kicking motion and the short-handed goal stood.

Nashville was not down yet, and during a 4-on-4, Sullivan one-timed a Weber feed in close with 5:39 to go and the Preds were back within two.

In desperation, Rinne was pulled for an extra skater twice within the final two minutes, but Cal Clutterbuck and Marek Zidlicky each hit the empty net to seal the win for Minnesota.

"We knew what the task at hand was, it was to win this hockey game and we came up short," Sullivan said. "This group is very resilient. For the last 20-25 games I think that we all gelled well together and tried to make a run for it. Our goal is to make the playoffs and it's very deflating right now."

Arnott put the Preds on the board, converting a Sullivan dish at 7:18 of the first period, then Fritsche evened the score with a breakaway at 12:58. Brunette potted a rebound for a power-play goal and 2-1 Minnesota lead with 26 seconds to play before the first intermission.

The Wild went up by two at the 4:47 mark of the second period, as Bergeron cruised down the left wing and snuck a low shot between Rinne's pads. Marian Gaborik and James Sheppard helped Johnsson score a man-advantage goal with 4:04 left in the period for a 4-1 game.

Only 18 seconds later, Arnott notched his second of the game by stuffing home a rebound but Minnesota took a 5-2 edge with 1:51 to play after Bergeron managed to blast one off bodies in front and home for another power-play score.
