How Schools Will Handle Tuesday's Obama Speech

President Barack Obama will speak to school children across the country Sept. 8 via satellite, and that isn't sitting well with some area parents. Schools across the region are making decisions about whether to air the speech.

  • Davidson County:
    Metro Nashville schools said they will leave it up to each school's principals to determine if the speech fits into their daily curriculum. A district spokesperson said any parent who has concerns should contact their child's school.

  • Cheatham County:
    Schools will show the speech but parents can opt out.

  • Maury County:
    Leaving the decision up to each teacher on whether to show the speech.

  • Rutherford County:
    Schools will air the speech, and in a letter to parents, stated, "We do believe that when the President of the United States speaks, it is our duty to listen, even if some don't agree with his policies." Parents can opt out if they do not want their child to watch.

  • Hickman County:
    Not showing speech

  • Sumner County:
    Schools will allow parents to make the decision of whether they want their children to see the speech.
    "We felt like giving people the option of saying, 'Hey I'm not comfortable with this,' or saying, 'Yes, we definitely like them to hear the speech,' was probably the best way to go,” said Sumner County Schools Spokesman Jeremy Johnson.

  • Wilson County:
    Director of schools advised teachers to not show the speech, stating, "We feel it is more important for teachers to protect instructional time by focusing on teaching the content standards." Schools will not show speech.

    Williamson County:
    Leaving the decision up to each teacher on whether to show the speech.
