Are prosecutors and Metro police a little nervous about their conviction of Perry March?
Word On The Street: (9/25/06)Are they concerned about a motion for a new trial to be filed by March's defense attorneys citing legal errors in March's trial?Or maybe if the lawyers lose that motion, what about their appeal to the State Court of Criminal Appeals?Defense Attorney John Herbison cites a bushel basket full of issues which will be raised in the appeals. We will have more on thatJeanne King is a writer for Reuters News Service and an accomplished New York author who specializes in books on crimes. But we will discuss that later.King is now writing a book on the Perry March case. For the past few days, she has been in Nashville trying to do interviews for research about the book.King first tried to talk to Prosecutor Tom Thurman, but said she was told he was busy.Next, she hoped to talk with Metro Police Commander Mickey Miller who headed the Homicide Bureau during most of the early investigation into the disappearance of Janet Levine March a little over 10 years ago.But Miller was not involved in the case for the past couple of years because of a change in assignments.Strangely, prosecutors did not even call him to the witness stand to testify.Jeanne King phoned Miller, but he referred her to police spokesman Don Aaron, who happened to be out of the city. She was then told to call Assistant Chief Joey Bishop, who heads the investigative section, for permission to talk with Miller.King was then told to call Deputy Chief Steve Anderson if she needed to talk with Miller. No luck there either. But she was referred to contact Detective Sgt. Pat Postiglione who handled the case after March was arrested and returned from Mexico. She finally was able to talk with Postiglione, an excellent investigator and Aaron.King was puzzled about why she was not allowed to talk with Miller."It just doesn't make sense," the writer says.Aaron agreed. He ordered King be allowed to interview Miller this week.Of course, by now, King has already returned to New York.
