Purcell Firm On City, Sounds Stadium Agreement

UPDATED: 7:17 pm CDT September 11, 2006

Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell said the city is not going to spend more money to build a stadium for the Sounds baseball team. There were reports that Metro may have to pay an additional $250,000 in hidden costs for the stadium.

The new problems have occurred because plans to build some of the adjecent condo have fallen through.

Purcell said the city is clear where it stands on the stadium deal.

He said the city worked with the minor league team for a long time on the agreement so it could protect the taxpayers.

"People ought to be clear that we aren’t going to take money away from this fire department for a baseball stadium or from the police department for a baseball stadium or for education and move it into a baseball stadium,” said Metro Mayor Bill Purcell.

Purcell said he expects everyone to live up to the original deal for the new downtown complex, and he does not expect anything to change.

The 10,000 seat ballpark will be situated on the old Nashville thermal transfer plant site.

The first game at the new stadium is planned for April 2008.
