Petitioners Urge Support For Property Tax Referendum

Voters in Davidson County may soon have a say on whether their property taxes can be raised.

Several people showed up at the county election commission office on Tuesday and dropped off a stack of petitions.

The petitions include the signatures of more than 15,000 people who say they support a plan that would give them the right to vote on proposed increases.

“It's very simple. It's not complicated. It simply says in the amendment if the Metro council wants to raise the property tax rate, they must hold a referendum and let us vote on it,” said the petition organizer, Ben Cunningham.

Organizers expect the election commission to start looking at the petition in about a month.

If the commission certifies the signatures, the proposed amendment would appear on the Nov. 7 ballot.
