NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Nashville emergency officials are encouraging people to provide vital information that can be delivered quickly to first responders in the event of an emergency.

The city announced Friday the launch of Smart911, which allows people to submit information such as medical conditions or disabilities through a secure web site that can be accessed during an emergency call."It's Web-based program in which citizens can sign up for free, register their phones and really any critical information about themselves or their family that they want 911 call takers to see immediately upon placing an emergency call," said Amanda Sluss of the Office of Emergency Management. "You can register landlines, and you can register cell phones and register as many as you want for your household … If you're on particular types of medicine that could be critical in a medical event, you can put that information in there as well."Emergency Communications Center Director Duane Phillips said they see a growing number of calls from mobile phones and this service would help them more efficiently process emergency calls."You can register how many children do you have in your household, and you can put their pictures in there," said Sluss. "And let's say we have a missing child incident. Those pictures are immediately made available to the police."The Web site is
