A fire badly damaged a historic home in Columbia on Tuesday night.

The house, located along Howard Lane, is badly charred from the blaze.

The home was built in the 1850s but has been converted to apartments.

Firefighters said the fire started when someone left unattended food on the stove.

Crews rescued a cat and a dog from the apartments. No one was hurt.
