A criminal with a conscience turned himself back in after he was mistakenly released from jail.

The man was serving time for assault at the workhouse in Montgomery County.

According to a spokesman with the Sheriff's Department, when the man paid his bond on a separate charge Friday, a booking clerk made a mistake and the man was released.

The man contacted authorities a short time later and was taken back into custody.

The clerk responsible for the mistake resigned before disciplinary actions were taken, reported the Leaf-Chronicle.
