NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A 22-year-old Bellevue resident is facing charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash after a fatal collision Wednesday morning on Highway 70 killed a pedestrian.
Police said Matthew W. Winn was driving a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck westbound on Highway 70 near Hicks Road when the vehicle collided with Hongyong Lee, 48, who was in the middle of the traffic lane closest to the curb.It was unclear in which direction Lee was walking. Lee lived at the nearby Waterford Place Apartments. After striking Lee, police said, Winn turned around and pulled into the Shell convenience market across the street. Winn called a friend and said that he had hit something in the roadway. The friend went to the scene, realized that a person was down in the street and went to help. At some point thereafter, Winn left the scene and went to his Bay Cove Trail home, according to police. When police arrived, they learned from the friend that Winn was involved in the wreck. At the request of police, the friend contacted Winn and asked him to return to the scene. Winn did so, driving his mother’s car, not the F-250 pickup truck.Officers went to Winn’s home and, based on the evidence on the truck, quickly determined that it had hit a person. When officers spoke to Winn, they said they noticed that he smelled of alcohol. Winn admitted to drinking “two or three beers.” During the administration of field sobriety tasks, Winn appeared to be unsteady on his feet and had difficulty following directions. He agreed to submit a blood sample for alcohol analysis.Police said additional charges against Winn are possible as the investigation continues.
