NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Corinthian Baptist Church of North Nashville and First Unitarian Universalist Church of Green Hills are on opposite ends of Nashville. Green Hills is an affluent area; north Nashville has battled crime for decades.
On Sunday, geography and social status took a back seat to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of social justice. The two churches have a long history of fighting for justice that dates back to the early civil rights movement. The Rev. Enoch Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Baptist Church, said race relations have come a long way in the United States since the 1960s."Here we are with an event that could not have taken place comfortably in America less than 30 years ago." he said. The Rev. Gail Seavey pastor of First Unitarian Universalist Church, wants one important message of King to come through."Justice is the expression on the ground of love, and that's what King taught us, she said. "If we really love, we are actually working to make justice."The two congregations will travel together to Selma Alabama to observe the anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march to protest segregation.
