NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Only one in four voters supports plans for Nashville's new convention center -- but there's overwhelming support for putting the issue to public vote, according to an independent poll conducted for Channel 4 News.
The scientific poll found that 26 percent of those polled supported Nashville's plans to build and finance the Music City Center. Fifty percent rejected the idea. Twenty-one percent were undecided. The remainder were unfamiliar with the issue. One area where there was overwhelming support: letting voters decide. Some 72 percent of those asked believed the project should be delayed in order to hold a referendum. If Metro Council members move ahead with the convention center and don't put the issue to a public vote, the poll suggests that some voters might express their displeasure in during the next election.Forty-two percent of those polled said they would be less likely to support a politician for re-election if they supported the Music City Center project. Twenty-two percent said they would be more likely to re-elect those officials, and 37 percent said it wouldn't make a difference. But when we asked those who opposed the project altogether, 87 percent of them said they would be less likely to re-elect a politician who votes in favor of it. Among the 26 percent of voters who said they support it, 69 percent of them said they would be more likely to re-elect a politician who supported the convention center. The poll involved a random sample of 401 registered voters in Davidson County contacted by telephone Jan. 4 and 5. The poll was conducted by the research firm Crawford, Johnson and Northcott. The survey has a margin of error of +/-4 percent. Full Questions, Results From Poll
