Grants Totaling $1 Million Will Go Toward South Central Tennessee Workforce Board

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- State officials say workers displaced by the closure of the Spring Hill General Motors assembly plant are able to get job-training help.Former employees of the plant, as well as workers of suppliers that served the plant, can get training through the Tennessee Career Center in Columbia, near the GM plant.The Tennessean reported Wednesday that grants totaling $1 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will go to the South Central Tennessee Workforce Board, which provides services with the Columbia center.Dislocated workers can get training in areas such as business information technology, solar panel installation, medical coding, practical nursing and health information technology. Workers can also get accelerated teacherTraining providers include the Tennessee Technology Center at Hohenwald, the Tennessee Technology Center at Pulaski, and Columbia State Community College.75 Let Go At Bowling Green Corvette PlantGeneral Motors’ Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky., has let go of 75 more workers. But the 486 employees who remain learned Wednesday there are no plans by GM for any temporary shutdown in 2010.Workers endured 26 weeks of shutdowns this year.
