NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A fire destroyed several units, damaged more than a dozen others and affected about 20 residents at the Mission Bellevue Ridge Apartments early Monday morning.
The fire started at about 4 a.m. at the complex located along Belle Valley Drive. Residents said when they woke up, flames were shooting through the roof of the complex.Once on the scene, firefighters called for additional units to battle the flames. Most of the damage was contained to the upper floors. Some residents said smoke detectors did not go off in their apartments. However, investigators said the apartment complex performed a fire test recently to make sure everything was working properly, and it was.All of the residents made it out safely. Managers at the complex are providing the victims a place to stay at some of the company's other properties.According to a fire captain, the fire started when someone was cooking with oil in an apartment kitchen. The Red Cross assisted seven children and more than a dozen adults displaced by the blaze. The support for those affected has been so overwhelming that organizers said they don't need anymore donations. They said they want to thank everyone who helped out with everything from toys to clothes.Click below to watch raw video of the fire recorded by a resident:
