Fewer BlueCross Customers Affected By Data Theft
Correction: Not All 2 Million TN Members Affected
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee says "far less" than 2 million members are affected by an October theft of hard drives containing personal information. The drives were stolen during an October break-in at Eastgate Town Center, a facility leased by BlueCross BlueShield in Chattanooga. The company said 57 drives were stolen -- a number lower than previously reported on WSMV.COM.The drives contained encoded data recordings and "certain protected health information," according to a letter the company issued to group administrators in November. That letter states that "some recordings may have included the member's date of birth or Social Security number.""While BlueCross continues its exhaustive process to determine the exact number of members affected, BlueCross still does not know the exact number of members effective, however, it will be far less than 2 million", said a company representative in a letter to WSMV Monday. A story previously posted on WSMV.COM incorrectly stated the theft affected all 2 million members of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. In the aftermath of the data theft, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is taking several steps, including:
- Sending written notices to members identified as being affected by the data breach
- Providing members whose Social Security numbers are at risk with credit monitoring for a 12-month period
- Obtaining an independent assessment of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee's data and facility security
