The teen driver of a 1992 Mazda Miata was speeding when it skidded off of Steele Road near Highway 48 North, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

"The driver lost control, went into a sideway skid, left the roadway and then struck a tree, at which point it exploded or caught on fire," said Lt. Richard Cash of the THP.

The car was on fire when emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

Police said Tyler Broadfoot, 16, was one of the victims. The investigating trooper said Tyler was not wearing his seat belt.

The name of the other student has not been released.

No funeral arrangements have been announced.
