Spring Hill Police Chief John Smith said he was sore from moving furniture and took a painkiller left over from an old codeine prescription to ease the pain. That's what he said led him to fail a recent random drug test.

Police Chief: Old Prescription Failed Drug Test

Smith will now have to undergo counseling and will be subjected to at least six more random tests over the next year. Officials said the counselor will determine whether this is an isolated incident or if the chief needs to undergo rehabilitation.

The former Marine said he took the last two pills of Tylenol 3 and threw away the bottle.

Smith said he has never failed a drug test in his 25 years of military and law enforcement service.
