FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- A Franklin paint company criticized for causing chemical pollution has agreed to start cleaning up the Harpeth River. In a mediated settlement, neighbors and the Egyptian Lacquer company have suspended all lawsuits to give the cleanup plan a chance. Two chemicals were found entering the river from the company's plant a few years ago.Over the last two years, there have been lawsuits involving Harpeth Watershed Association, the neighbors who complained and Egyptian Lacquer."We are working to resolve this. We think this mediation is one big step forward," said Bill Penny, an attorney for Egyptian Lacquer. The 60-day treatment of the Harpeth River begins immediately. All lawsuits are suspended for four months, and then the situation will be re-evaluated.
