NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A woman accused of kidnapping an infant said she was desperate to have a child and had tried adoption with no luck.
Tammy Silas said she paid for a child and that she doesn't know exactly what went wrong to land her in the Robertson County Jail.Silas is the only person accused in the kidnapping of Yair Carrillo and his travel across state lines. For three nights and four days, she pretended Yair was her own, calling him Martin Jr., after her boyfriend.Police said she is the person who drove to Maria Gurrola's home Sept. 29, posed as an immigration agent, stabbed the new mother nine times and kidnapped her baby.In her first-ever interview from jail, Silas told Channel 4 over the phone that "the other parties involved, no one's looking at them."I met the mother back in June in Nashville," said Silas. "She was willing to give up the baby for an amount of money."Silas said Sept. 29 was the day the arranged baby sale occurred."I paid money to Delacrus, and Jose was present," said Silas.Jose is the baby's father.Silas said the exchange took place "in Nashville, off Murfreesboro Road in apartments near the Mapco. That's where they brought me the baby, and I gave them the money."But, Silas said, she was never at the house where the family lived."What happened at that house happened before or after I got the baby. … Bottom line, I thought I was just getting a baby," she said. "I didn't want to buy, but when I got turned down every other way, what was I to do?"As to who might have hurt the mother, Silas said "probably Delacrus," whom she said set up the sale."Mybe money-wise, like, she didn't get enough or she changed her mind," said Silas. The baby's parents wouldn't answer any specific questions about Silas' accusations, but their attorney Elliott Ozment said, "We emphatically deny any allegations made by the alleged kidnapper in this case that these parents were involved.""I was very glad me and my husband were able to get Yair back," said Gurrola through a translator. "I am going to give thanks to God for reunited me with Yair, my three kids and thankful for all the people that have been very professional with me and my husband and the people that helped us reunite with our kids."Silas said she couldn't remember the Delacrus woman's last name and didn't say how she came up with $25,000.Silas is set to go to trial on the kidnapping charges in January.Gurrola is better but still recovering. She's in therapy, and her family is still traumatized. Gurrola said her 3-year-old still asks questions about what happened.
