NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Maria Gurrola was stabbed, her days-old child was stolen and accusations were floated that her child might have been willingly sold. Since Yair Carrrillo's abduction, Gurrola has been reunited with her son and is now healing from her wounds and ready to talk about what happened that September day.
"One emotion was that I was scared, terrified," Gurrola said through a translator. She didn't say much about the day she was attacked and stabbed inside her home, but she did make it clear she was frantic and worried that someone had just stolen her 4-day-old baby. Her husband wasn't there to help her; he was at work when the stabbing and abduction occurred."I felt desperate because I didn't know anything about her because the police wouldn't tell me anything about her until 11 o'clock at night," said Antonio Carrillo. The next few days, the entire family rode a roller coaster of emotion. The baby was found safe and was reunited with his mother, but then authorities took the baby and the couple's other three children away. The reason, they said, is that "they were taking cues from law enforcement.""I was sad because I didn't have (Yair) with me. Devastated," Gurrola said. But right before a custody hearing, the case against the couple was dropped and all the children were returned.Elliott Ozment began representing the couple after he said the Mexican General Consulate visited the family and was outraged by the way they were treated. Ozment is now demanding answers from the Department of Children's Services and Metro police."Now what I want to find out is what information prompted this action," said Ozment. "What is in their files about this mother and father, and why were their children taken away from them?"Ozment said he wants the authorities to give account for their actions."Just because Tammy Silas is arrested and in federal custody does not mean the investigations are over. They are not," said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron. "The questions of why and how Yair was chosen by Tammy Silas remain very much open and unresolved, as far as the police department is concerned.""I also want to know why Mr. Aaron is still claiming that he doesn't know the question to the answer he's asked," said Ozment. "I found out the answer to that question within 15 minutes of my first interview with this mother and father."Ozment said he isn't going to divulge that information."What I want is some information given to me," he said.If Ozment doesn't get answers from Metro police or DCS soon, he plans to take legal action to force the disclosure of those records.Gurrola still has extensive damage to her eye, and some of her teeth that were ripped out during the attack have been replaced. She is also in therapy and her family is still traumatized. Her 3-year-old, she said, still asks questions about what happened.
