NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The family of a kidnapped Nashville baby says that the woman accused of taking the boy makes ridiculous claims in her letter to Channel 4 News.
In that letter, Tammy Silas accused the baby's father of trying to sell her the child for $25,000.Norma Rodriguez was shocked and angry as she read the letter Silas mailed to Channel 4 News."We don't think anything that she's saying here is true," said Rodriguez.Silas is charged with kidnapping Yair Carrillo, but in the letter Silas said through a friend in jail that "there's more to this story than anyone knows" and "that she did not steal the baby at all; they sold the baby to her for $25,000."Much of the letter refers to Silas as "she" because it was dictated and indicated that Silas could not read or write English very well."We don't think that's true that there was a sale, especially since she is saying that somebody sold the baby to her and she bought it to love, but if my family really wanted to have sold the baby, we wouldn't have been looking for the baby afterwards," said Rodriguez. The letter also alleges that "the dad, Jose, has the most, big part in it all."Rodriguez spoke Wednesday to the father, who is also her cousin. The family believes this is Silas' attempt to take the focus off her."He said pretty much the same thing. He thinks that this is ridiculous ... and she's trying to mix stuff up for him," said Rodriguez. In the letter, Silas also mentions "a woman named Delacrus" being involved."The only people that have mentioned this name is actually the FBI and the (Tennessee Bureau of Investigation). They mentioned these names when they were doing all their interrogations and stuff like that with my sister and with Maria, but we don't know anybody with that name," said Rodriguez."Someone had to have helped her; we are sure of that because all the way from Alabama, she's not going to know that Maria was pregnant and when she gave birth, because this happened the day after she came home from the hospital," she said.Whether someone else is involved is something Metro police and the FBI are still investigating. As for Maria Gurrola and her family, despite the allegations, they believe that Silas is guilty and will pay for the crime.Gurrola's cousin said that she is doing better, and her family is trying to limit what they tell her about the case.
