NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Metro police and the Davidson County Sheriff's office are searching for a war veteran who went missing from an east Nashville group home on Monday morning.

Donnie Lee Smith, 59, went missing at about 6 a.m. from the Brittany Care Home on Brittany Drive after stepping outside to smoke a cigarette.

Police said Smith is a black man who was last seen wearing a gray baseball camp, a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Crews were using a helicopter in the search.

Caregivers said Smith is mentally ill and takes psychiatric medication and insulin.
