According to witnesses, a Metro police cruiser was approaching a stop sign on Herman Street in north Nashville when he turned on his lights and ran the stop sign.

Conitha Mason was driving through the intersection at the time and tried to speed up to avoid the officer. The cruiser collided with Mason’s truck, sending it airborne.

The truck slammed into a nearby pole, nearly breaking it in half.

Police would not release a statement at the scene Thursday night but a representative for the Metro department said the officer, Joseph Luers, was responding to an accident call when it hit the truck.

Police said Luers’ view of the intersection may have been obstructed by parked cars.

Officials said a 17-year-old, a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old were also in the car with Mason.

While there were no major injuries, police said none of the children was properly restrained.

Police issued no citations in the crash.
