An officer found the body of Edward Matthews, 46, on Fifth Avenue North and Church Street at about 7 a.m. during an extra patrol of the area. At first, the officer thought the man was asleep and tried to wake him up.

Police said these patrols are frequently made to check on homeless in the area.

Police are looking at surveillance video from cameras in the area for clues that may lead them to the killer.

Officers said Matthews was near Broadway and 5th Avenue late Monday night. It is unclear when he arrived at the bench on Church Street.

Detectives are talking with homeless individuals downtown about what they might have seen or heard during the night.

Matthews had been charged with 190 offenses over the past 20 years, police said.
