A man shot by Franklin police tried to hang himself Saturday morning inside his cell in the Williamson County Jail, said the Williamson County Sheriff's Department.

The department said a guard had spoken with him 10 minutes before his attempt.

He is in the intensive care unit at the Williamson County Medical Center.

Police said Demian Rivera pointed what looked like a gun at them after robbing the Kroger Pharmacy on Hillsboro Road last month.

Police said he has robbed the same pharmacy before. Rivera, a convicted felon with a long criminal history, has been identified as the robber who hit the store Aug. 2, according to police.
