MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A growing middle Tennessee business ready to add 300 jobs to its already $50 million a year business said it may have to leave Tennessee because the Tennessee Department of Transportation won't permit an access road.
It's an access road Barrett Firearms, which provides the rifle for the entire U.S. Army, is willing to pay for and has proof that TDOT approved.Ronnie Barrett may be an international name, but he's a hometown Murfreesboro boy. So when he had the opportunity to grow his business and add a $4.5 million building and potentially 300 new jobs, he bought five acres to do it in Murfreesboro.Barrett asked TDOT to grant him the easement to build a 550-foot road. TDOT chief engineer Paul Degges wrote a follow-up letter saying TDOT would allow the relocation of a fence, so Barrett got the permits and built a $4.5 million building. But TDOT returned and said it couldn't let the company build a road so close to the interstate."TDOT was very in favor of it. They said, 'Yes, we like it. It's an old farm fence out there. I think it's going to be easy just to move the fence,'" said Barrett. "Now we have the inability to be able to win certain government contracts because our building's not big enough.""We simply couldn't do it on the rightaway," said TDOT commissioner Gerald Nicely. "Barrett Firearms chose to file a lawsuit, and we're going to contest it."Barrett said he needs to expand his business and hire 300 more people. He said he can't believe he may be in the position of taking this out of his home state. The jobs Barrett would create would have a salary between $26,000 to $45,000 a year.
