NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This weekend, a large outreach helped hundreds of homeless veterans in downtown Nashville.
Operation Stand Down Nashville offered social services, food, comfortable housing and counseling services to more than 425 veterans. This marked the 17th year for the outreach."(We offered) every service you could imagine, from legal, to dental, to medical, clothing and food," said Steve Samra, one of the organizers for the three-day outreach. "You name it, we try to provide it here."Because of the size of the outreach, organizers tracked down about 50 agencies and recruited dozens of volunteers. According to Samra, the current condition of the economy only adds to the homelessness problem among veterans."This year, more than ever before, we've seen people who've never been at risk for homelessness," said Samra.According to the group, Nashville's homeless population stands at more than 2,200 people, with 30 percent having served in the military. Throughout the year, the group works with honorably discharged homeless veterans on transitional housing, job training and other skills. The group, a United Way agency, is always seeking additional help from the public.
