GALLATIN, Tenn. -- The husband of a Portland teacher was on the stand Thursday afternoon in Gallatin. He was testifying for the defense in his wife's trial on charges of statutory rape by an authority figure.

Doug Binkley Jr. told the jury he was unaware that his wife had sent more than 3,000 text messages and cell phone calls to the three boys with whom she is accused of having sexual relationships. Binkley said he wife frequently texted students because, he said, "she kept a good relationship with kids because she cared about them."

Prosecutors introduced cell phone records showing that almost 100 of those calls were made after 11 pm.

A government expert in analyzing cell phone calls said Binkley sent or received more than 3,000 text messages or cell phone calls to and from the boys. Holly Connor, a crime analyst, said there were 719 calls or texts between the teacher and one of the boys, 841 calls or texts with a second and 1,686 with the third.

Binkley's pastor testified that he helped Binkley clean out the closet at her school the day she took a leave of absence from her job.

Wednesday, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent testified a condom wrapper was found in the closet and that the wrapper had DNA that was a partial match to Binkley's. One of the three boys she's accused of having sex with said they had sex in the closet. The pastor, however, said he saw no condom wrapper in the closet the day he helped Binkley collect her belongings.

All three young men have testified about their intimate relationships with Binkley. She is on trial for statutory rape by an authority figure and other charges.

A third boy was on the stand Thursday morning testifying against her. The boy said when he was a 16-year-old student at Portland High, Binkley initiated the relationship by "grabbing my butt, and it wasn't an accident."

The boy, who is now 17, said they met several times over the next few months, including once at his house when his father wasn't home. They were in his bed, he said, but his father came home unexpectedly and Binkley left, trying to hide her identity.

Once, he said, Binkley invited him to her house when her husband wasn't home but her kids were.

"I was pretty shocked," the witness said. "I didn't know what to think."

He said the two would have had sex but "time got in the way."

He said Binkley would seem nervous when they would meet, "I guess because I was 16 and she was 37."

He described how, during their meetings, Binkley would touch his genitals.

Two of the students Binkley is charged with having sex with are brothers. The boy testifying Thursday is not one of the brothers.

Binkley's defense is that one of the brothers raped her and the other two are lying to cover for the brother.

"You can't rape the willing. She was willing to do everything she did," the third alleged victim said Thursday morning.
