CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Security cameras intended to deter crime in Clarksville parks remain in boxes, as the city doesn't have the capabilities for their functioning.
Council member Wallace Redd said he doesn't have the answers to questions such as what the plan is and if the cameras can be returned."You'd think that this would be an easy, pretty easy task -- to put a security camera in a park," said Redd, who proposed in March 2008 buying four security cameras for four of the city parks. "We were going to use those as kind of an experiment to see how it worked out, and then maybe later we would put cameras in all the parks."The council approved it and allocated $10,000 for the project. Two months later, Parks and Recreation cut a check and purchased the equipment for $9,700.But the cameras are in boxes at the Parks and Recreation Department."The way I look at it, we passed the ordinance," Redd said. "It's their job to get the camera and put it in the park."It turns out that Parks and Recreation overlooked a major detail: The cameras won't work without broadband capabilities -- something the city doesn't have.Representatives for the department said that the city's IT department is working to make sure the cameras don't go to waste. It's unknown why it's taking so long. The city is considering a number of options, such as buying broadband and possibly using the cameras for something else, but they have no plans to try to return them. The city's IT department will propose a plan to the council at a meeting Friday.
