NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A longtime Nashville business is hoping to save money on its bills and save the earth at the same time.

In a few weeks, the White Bridge Auto Wash will have solar panels installed on its roof to create its own energy.

"I'm very excited about it because you've got to be current," said car wash owner Karl Peters.

The Tennessee Valley Authority will credit the owner of the car wash for the energy produced by the solar panels.

"TVA will buy it back from them, so they'll get credit on their (Nashville Electric Service) bill for generating power each month," said Laurie Parker of the Nashville Electric Service.

The amount of money the panels will save will vary, and it will take some time to see a return.

"It's the right thing to do. It's the absolute right thing to do. If we have the opportunity, why not?" Peters said.

Businesses and homeowners can also receive help if they want to install solar panels. TVA will now pay $1,000 for installation.

Residents can also get tax credits as part of the stimulus package.

The White Bridge Auto Wash recycles some of the water that is used. The light bulbs at the facility are also energy efficient, and the outside sign uses a low amount of energy. The car wash will soon will be the only solar powered one in the area.

"This seems like the future. I'm going to make the investment and try to do it," said Peters.

The types of businesses these days that are becoming energy efficient are diverse. Everything from fast food restaurants to schools are using solar power.
