Police Rescue Baby From Hot Car

Baby In Vehicle For At Least An Hour, Say Police

Murfreesboro police said officers pulled a 5-month-old girl from inside a parked car and she was flown to Vanderbilt University's children's hospital.

Police spokesman Kyle Evans said Thursday morning there was no information available on her medical condition.

The Daily News Journal reported police were called to northwest Murfreesboro at about 3:24 p.m. Wednesday when someone noticed the child in the car.

Evans said the baby, Joy Bell, was in the vehicle for at least an hour. He said the air temperature was 92 degrees at the time and the heat index was 101 degrees.

The incident is still being investigated and no charges were immediately filed.

Jonathan and Joann Bell, the father and mother of the child, recently broke up, and Joann Bell was given custody at the objection of the father, who said she was unfit to care for their daughter.

Jonathan Bell was recently in a Rutherford County courtroom fighting for custody of Joy and her siblings.

"I tried to tell everybody that those kids needed help three weeks ago, and all of this could have been prevented," said Jonathan Bell.

According to Murfreesboro police, Joann Bell and at least one of her children, a 15 year old, and Joy had spent the day at a tanning salon and McDonald's. When they returned home at about 2:30 p.m., everyone got out of an SUV. It was, police said, at least an hour later when Joann Bell noticed Joy was missing.

The teenager found Joy strapped into a car seat in the SUV.

"I hope she gets buried under the jail," Jonathan Bell said of Joann Bell. "I have no sympathy for her whatsoever.

"The baby's not doing good," he said. "She was full of joy, and she was always real happy."

Jonathan Bell has set up a fund for Joy. Donations can be made at any Suntrust Bank.
