A Fort Campbell, Ky., soldier was shot to death after an argument escalated into gunfire at a Clarksville housing complex, police said.

Spc. Brandon C. Buettner, 24, died from his injuries Saturday evening, officials said.

Police spokesman Jim Knoll told The Leaf-Chronicle that Buettner was shot while leaving the housing complex in a vehicle, but Knoll had limited details as investigators continued to talk with witnesses.

Knoll said Clarksville's low-income housing areas were once off limits to military personnel, but soldiers are now allowed to those areas.

He said the Army's Criminal Investigation Division will assist with the investigation.

According to an Army news release, Buettner was a power generation equipment repairer. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

He joined the Army in October 2006 and arrived at Fort Campbell in March 2007.

Buettner is survived by his mother, Denise Buettner of Kansas, and father, Steven Buettner of Oklahoma, the release said.
