Clarksville police arrested Joseph Michael Smith and Michelle Ann Douglas Wednesday. Smith, Douglas and an 18-month-old child were socializing at a house in Clarksville when the host noticed the boy's injuries and called police."This needed to be told," said Sgt. Jim Knoll of the Clarksville Police Department. "These people needed to be where they are: in jail."Officers said the child was found suffering from serious injuries such as a broken arm, fractured ribs, bruises and burn marks. They believe he was hurt June 15 or 16 in Campbell County. More charges could be filed there. The boy was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.Smith is facing aggravated neglect and endangerment charges, while Douglas is facing aggravated neglect, endangerment and accessory after the fact. A judge set bond at $250,000 on Smith and $500,000 on Douglas.Officers believe Douglas knew about the child's severe injuries and didn't try to get him help. According to a warrant on file at the courthouse, the soldier admitted causing the boy's injuries."It's disgusting. I'm a parent, and I have a child, so, you know, it sort of tears at me," said Knoll. "You never get used to seeing a child that's been abused and harmed, that's 18 months old, who can do nothing to anyone."Douglas is an infantryman and not the boy's father.Reporter Nancy Amons contributed to this story.Copyright 2009 by WSMV.com.
