Officers Shoot At Driver In Self-Defense

Vehicle Reverses Toward Them, Say Police

Metro and Berry Hill police officers opened fire on a hit-and-run suspect near the state fairgrounds overnight.

Berry Hill officers spotted the car from an earlier hit-and-run on Interstate 24 and picked up the pursuit. Metro police then helped in the chase.

Officers approached the car when it crashed at Craighead Street and Nolensville Pike, but the driver put the car in reverse. That's when officers said they started shooting at the car in self-defense.

The driver was not hit and took off before crashing a second time a few blocks away near Fourth Avenue.

He was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment but is expected to be charged once he recovers. Police also believe the driver had been drinking.
