KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said two people were killed when a small plane crashed at Melton Hill Lake in east Tennessee this weekend.

The pilot, Bret Smith, 40, of Cheatham County, was flying with his friend, Ron Siedentoph, 54, when the plane crashed, killing both of them.Smith was in town for Siedentoph's son's engagement party in Knoxville.FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the small sea plane was destroyed while attempting to land on the lake. Bergen said the crash occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday.Witness Frank Murchison told The Knoxville News Sentinel the aircraft had successfully touched down on the lake at least two times before crashing.According to the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle newspaper, Smith is the son of Clarksville city judge Charles Smith.Copyright 2009 by WSMV.com.
