Officer Killed In Off-Duty Motorcycle Wreck

LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Lebanon Police Department is mourning the death of an officer who was killed in an off-duty motorcycle wreck late Saturday night.
Video: Lebanon Officer Killed In Motorcycle CrashPolice said Officer Jeff Stone was killed instantly when a car pulled out in front of him at the intersection of South Cumberland Avenue and West Jennings Street.Friends and co-workers said Stone will be remembered as someone with a kind heart who was always willing to help others. In March, he helped sponsor a bike benefit for a lieutenant battling cancer."Jeff was one of those people who was always willing to help out his fellow officer, fellow employee," said Lebanon Chief of Police Scott Bowen. "It's a tough time right now."Jose Chavez of Lebanon, the driver who hit Stone, was also injured in the wreck. Police said that neither alcohol nor drugs played a part in the crash, but police think Chavez and a passenger in his car are in the country illegally.Chavez has been jailed in Wilson County. The passenger is in federal custody.All 72 Lebanon police officers will wear a black band across their badges to remember the killed officer. Stone leaves behind a wife and three children.Visitation services are scheduled for Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Partlow Funeral Chapel in Lebanon.Another visitation is being held Wednesday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral.
