PLEASANT VIEW, Tenn. -- A Boy Scout leader said he cannot go on trips with his troop because the Boy Scouts of America says he's too fat. The organization's new medical form spells out who can and cannot go on certain Boy Scout trips, and many bigger people say they are being left out.Larry Armstrong is a busy guy. He's got his flooring business, his work as a Pleasant View volunteer firefighter and his work as the troop committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 458."It's supposed to teach morals and responsibility and trust," said Armstrong. The new annual health and medical record form states that "it is important to note that the height/weight chart must be strictly adhered to if the event will be to take the unit beyond a radius wherein emergency evacuation is more than 30-minutes by ground transportation."Armstrong is 6 feet 2 inches tall and 360 pounds. The Boy Scouts want him down to 252 pounds to go any high-adventure trips, backpacking or even the Montgomery Bell Academy day camp, where Armstrong is the volunteer archery instructor."That's going to put out a lot of volunteers," Armstrong said. "It's hard to get people to sign up now.""We want parents and others who are interested in being involved in scouting to participate. What we're referring to is outdoor, strenuous activities in which there is some risks. We just don't want them to be hurt or in any way endangered," said Hugh Travis, district executive of the Middle Tennessee Council of Boy Scouts. The Tennessee chapter said it wants fathers of any size to participate in scouting and that it will work to that end. The national policies are, however, set nationally. Popular Slideshows On WSMV.com:
