Hillsboro High School in Nashville has now won three state championships. You may remember the football team's upset victory over Maryville in the 4-A championship or the historic nail-biter in girls basketball -- the first Metro girls team to win in more than 30 years.

The school's latest state championship is in U.S. government competition.

A Hillsboro AP government class won the state championship in We the People. The competition breaks into groups of six who prepare papers and arguments on certain points of democracy before being grilled by lawmakers and college professors about their positions.

"I really didn't know near enough about government," said Hendrix Brakefield.

Now this class is preparing for the big dance in Washington, DC. While the trip will be fun, don't look for any slackers -- this is a group that is taking the competition seriously. It's time to sharpen up those arguments for a group of state champions who are really starting to feel it.

"Winning state really kind of sparked this interest in them to learn about civics and government," said the class' teacher.

All that's left is raising all the money, so the group is going to the old fundraising triple threat: the bake sale, yard sale and car wash, held next Saturday, April 4, from 8 a.m. until they sell out, and all the cars are clean in front of Hillsboro High School.
