SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -- A lawyer in Shelbyville is being questioned amid allegations from his clients that he pulled a gun on them in his office.
Video: Couple Says Attorney Pointed Gun At ThemJosh and Tasha Hendon said attorney Burt English helped them settle a homeowner's insurance claim in which they received a check for $4,000.But the Hendons said their Friday visit to English's office had them frightened for their lives."That's the first time I've ever had a gun pointed at me or in my direction," said Tasha Hendon. "I was real scared."The Hendons said English wasn't going to let them leave with their check, even though they said the lawyer had already been paid for his services. The couple said that is when English and a female office worker got confrontational and a weapon was shown."She was blocking the door. She had locked the door. Burt English come out and said, 'Freeze, you all aren't going anywhere with that check,' He had a gun and it was pointed right at me and my husband," said Tasha Hendon. When Channel 4 asked for his side of the story, English only replied "no comment."According to a police report, several witnesses gave police a different version of what exactly happened with the gun.The police report said English first said he didn't bring the gun out of the office, and then he later said he didn't have a gun. One office worker said the gun was in English's pocket, but another said it was out but not pointed at the clients. The Hendons want the lawyer to face charges for the incident."I think Burt was trying to bully us out of the money, and with times like they are, every cent counts, and you can't let someone bully you," said Josh Hendon. The couple said they're also filing a complaint with the bar association and the state board that licenses lawyers. English has not been charged. The district attorney said he may ask an outside lawyer to handle the case in order to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.
