COLUMBIA, Tenn. -- A man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in the wounding of a Maury County sheriff's deputy.
Video: Veteran Maury County Deputy Shot Police charged Damon Brewer, 43, with attempted murder in the shooting.The injured officer, Sgt. Brian Owens, was called to investigate a domestic dispute on Sowell Mill Pike after a woman said there was someone in her home threatening her with a pistol."I also arrived on the scene as (Owens) went to enter the house," said Capt. Nathan Johns with the Maury County Sheriff's Department. "He was met with gunshot, gunfire, and he was injured as he was shot there as he was going into the door."A man reportedly shot four rounds at the deputy, hitting him once. Owens fired one round but did not hit anyone. He was hit in the lower jaw with a .357; his injuries are not said to be life-threatening."Thankfully it appears at this point that he's going to be OK," said Johns.The officer was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center by police escort because the weather was too bad to fly him.Owens underwent surgery on his jaw Monday. While it's healing, he will get meals through a feeding tube."(Owens is) a 20-year veteran of our department, an outstanding guy, good family man," said Johns. "And he's going to be OK."Brewer was charged with three counts, for wounding Owens and firing at Brewer's wife and Maury County deputy Bradley Thompson, who was responding with Owens. No one else was hurt.The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
