NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Metro Animal Control said they are so overrun with dogs and cats that now they have to put as many as 20 animals to sleep every day.
Video: Too Many Animals Leads To Euthanasia | ImagesDirector Judy Ladebauche said it breaks her heart having to euthanize so many animals."We're talking 10 to 20, probably, a day," Ladebauche said. With the weak economy, Ladebauche said a lot more people are dropping off pets, saying they just can't afford to keep them anymore. Since Animal Control doesn't turn any away, overcrowding has led to euthanizing animals at an alarming rate.Animal Control employees said euthanizing an animal is the hardest part of their job."To take a young, healthy, playful animal and realize that there's no more space for it, it's very hard on the staff," Ladebauche said. There are more than 250 animals in the shelter. In addition to talking to pet owners about how they can reduce expenses for their animals, the shelter has recently reduced adoption fees."We're hoping with the economic tough times, that will help people be able to add a new pet," she said.To adopt a pet, visit Metro Animal Control on Harding Pike, open Tuesday to Saturday.
