MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A day care in Murfreesboro shut down by the state Friday and padlocked after a police report said a child got away and wandered off near a busy street. The 2-year-old boy wandered about 100 yards away from The Learning Connection.
Watch This StoryAccording to Murfreesboro police, a motorist reported finding a 2-year-old boy wandering alone outside the day care near a busy street. Four days later, the Department of Human Services decided to shut down the day care. The Learning Connection was already on probation for having too many children and not enough teachers. The state's investigation also discovered the 2-year-old boy had been improperly signed out the day he was found by the motorist. In fact, there was no signature at all, just the word "Mom."
But the child's mother was in police custody, couldn't have signed him out and wouldn't have been allowed to just sign out as "Mom."Tanisha King teaches at The Learning Connection in Murfreesboro, where her 3-year-old daughter Destiny attends. King said there were many days she felt overwhelmed.“I have two other teachers’ sets of children," said King, "so I have 30 instead of my 10. I have to look everywhere that I’m seeing children are trying to climb over the fence and I’m trying to call them down; someone’s hit someone in the head with a rock over here; I’m trying to correct that.”King and teacher Shatika Swader said owners Syed and Nadira Hasnain met with staff over the weekend and told them the building had been sold. Monday, the note just above the lock on the door read, "New management will take over soon."The owners of The Learning Connection also operate another day care in Murfreesboro, but the Take A Break group home is much smaller and is still open for business. The Department of Human Services stopped by the center Monday to make sure no children were there. There is a hearing set for the suspension on Wednesday.
