NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Comcast is raising its rates for cable in less than a month.
Watch This StoryComcast is not increasing rates for Internet and digital voice service, but standard and digital cable rates are going up by 3.5 percent.Comcast customer Rebecca Strickland's said her bill is already more than $150 for basic cable, phone and Internet. The old rate for basic cable from Comcast is $52.50, but tack on 3.5 percent and the new rate will be $55.75.Comcast has the fifth largest commercial fleet of vehicles in the US.Comcast said it spends about $6 billion a year on programming and anticipates spending more in the next year, especially on sports. “There’s only one option, actually, so I don't really have a choice in who I can pay,” said Comcast customer Xan Paxton. “Comcast is the only one who services my area.”But competition is coming.“When companies compete, consumers win,” said AT&T spokesman Bob Corney.Within the next two years, AT&T will also be offering digital cable options to most of Tennessee.“We're going to compete aggressively to win customers,” Corney said. “We're going to work as quick as we can to deliver our services, and we think our product is cooler than cable.”Comcast said if you currently have a special promotion, you will continue receiving that special price until the contract expires. But starting Nov. 1, get ready to pay a few extra dollars each month.Along with AT&T, another cable provider just filed an application a few weeks ago to provide service to about 2 million people in some parts of Tennessee.
