Teacher Charged With Statutory Rape

PORTLAND, Tenn. -- A Portland High School teacher has been charged with statutory rape by an authority figure.
Watch This StoryPolice said the charge is a result of an incident involving Sandy Binkley and a 17-year-old boy. Binkley was 35 when the incident allegedly happened in March of this year, before spring break, during school hours.The teenager told his parents, who reported the incident to school administrators this week.Jeremy Johnson, Sumner County Schools spokesman, said the school district will not tolerate the type of behavior alleged in the incident. Binkley has been suspended by the school system without pay.She could face six to eight years, if convicted. She turned herself into police Thursday.District Attorney Ray Whitley said it is too soon to determine if this was an isolated incident or if there are other victims.
