Energy Efficiency and Demand Response employee Darrick Wright, 37, died Wednesday in Baghdad while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom for the U.S. Army Reserve. He is TVA's first loss in this war.

Wright was a captain in the Engineering Brigade. He joined TVA in October 2000 as an electrical engineer in Customer Service and Marketing. He later worked in Pricing and Contracts before his most recent position as an analyst in Customer Resources' Market and Program Analysis department in Nashville in April 2007.

Wright is survived by his wife, Katina, whom government officials told her husband died of a massive heart attack. She is expecting their first child, whom she and her husband had already named Trevor, in November.

On the same day Katina Wright learned of her husband's death, a handwritten letter from him arrived in the mail.

She said that she remembers seeing a government car come down her street Wednesday and hoped it wasn't headed to her house.

"They don't come to say, 'hi,' and they don't come for smiles," she said. "And they got closer and closer. And I knew just as soon as they stopped just before my car."

This was Darrick Wright's second tour of duty in Iraw as a member of the 926th Army Reserve Unit based out of Alabama. He was deployed eight months, and Katina Wright was expecting him to return home in 60 days.

"I really think he would have instilled so many values in our son," she said, "and I know I can't do it on my own. His values in life were higher than anyone's I had ever seen. His morals ... his loyalty."

Family and friends planned a candlelight vigil for Friday evening outside of Darrick Wright's home on Antler Circle, in the Percy Priest area.
