A freshman at Middle Tennessee State University said she was so traumatized by an assault one week ago that she can't drive her car.

Police said the incident started when she was assaulted over a parking space, and though she sees the scars every day in the mirror, she said she's optimistic about life.

"Obviously we had a disagreement, but I never expected it. I didn't think she would cut me," said student Ashley Ramsay.

On Ramsay's second day of college at MTSU, a feud with another student over a parking spot left her with both physical and emotional scars.

"(One cut) is two centimeters deep, and it cut through an artery," said Ramsay. "Even now, I get paranoid in parking lots."

Ramsay's been a part of the band's color guard at MTSU since the beginning of school and calls the group her family. Unfortunately she found out on Wednesday that her injuries will prevent her from participating over the next year.

"Color guard has always been, winter guard especially, something I've always done, something I thought I was good at. It really helped me to express myself," said Ramsay.

The enthusiastic and caring spirit that she offers to color guard is something her father said is evident in all parts of her life.

"She told the receptionist at the doctor's office that she's glad it happened to her instead of someone else, because she didn't know if someone else would have been able to handle it or not," said father Tim Ramsay.

"Life has its ups and downs. What I really feel about this is this is really a down for me, but I know something good is going to happen, because God always balances things out," said Ashley Ramsay.

She will have surgery on Thursday to reconstruct the nerves in her face and will have another surgery next week to repair the tendons in her hand.

Ashley Ramsay is planning on going back to class on Monday, but said she will not be parking on campus.

Police arrested MTSU student Starlett Custer, 19, and charged her with assault in the attack.
