Accused serial killer Bruce Mendenhall was officially charged on Wednesday with trying to kill witnesses in his upcoming murder trial.

Mendenhall, 57, is charged with trying to hire two jail inmates to kill five witnesses in his trial including two police detectives.

The former truck driver told the judge in court on Wednesday that he did not have enough money to hire a lawyer.

The indictment charges Mendenhall with seeking to arrange the killings of Metro Police Sgt. Pat Postiglione, Detective Lee Freeman and three witnesses.

Mendenhall has been with the June 26, 2007, shooting death of Sara Nicole Hulbert whose body was found in a parking lot of Truck Stops of America on North First Street.

He was arrested by Postiglione and Freeman at the same truck stop on July 12, 2007.

Police believe Mendenhall is responsible for a string of deaths in other states.
